Jancie Boyko Goes Behind Bars for SOAC
Janice Boyko recently got herself “locked-up,” to benefit the athletes of Special Olympics Allegheny County (SOAC). Her sentence: to sit still for 8 hours (which is an extremely difficult feat for this active volunteer!) Janice borrowed the “lock-up” concept, went to the Chief of Police to make arrangements for her incarceration an sent letters to family and friends, detailing her plan. To earn her "get out of jail card," she raised more than $925 through the generosity of family and friends and made a difference for one of her favorite organizations.
So what did she do to while away the hours in lock-up? She read the paper, the Boro code, wrote some letters, counted ceiling tiles and actually had a few visitors. "Special Olympics brings those with intellectual disabilities together and has led to more athletes being streamlined into community activities today,” said Janice. "Special Olympics gives those who need it, an opportunity they wouldn't have had otherwise," she added.
Over the years, Janice has raised numerous donations for Special Olympics Allegheny County through her various sponsorships, fundraisers and lively antics. She is an example of the huge difference, one volunteer can make.
